ARTIST STATEMENT

Jacqui Hawk


There is a Gaelic word, ‘Anam Cara’ – it means ‘soul friend’, a person to whom you could reveal the hidden intimacies of your life. This friendship is an act of recognition and belonging. You are joined in an eternal way with the friend of your soul. My art is my ‘Anam Cara’. It is from me, to myself. It reflects the core of me.

Each painting is emotional in nature and a metaphor for my life’s journey, from my Scottish origins, travels around the world, personal struggles and challenges. It embodies the magic and whimsical illusions of a child and the strength and wisdom of a woman with an old soul.

I believe everyone is an artist. We have to bring out the silence and coax the invisible to become visible and to grow we need to be truthful to our vulnerable complexity. I work mainly in mixed media, including acrylics, oils, wax, pearlescent powders, gesso of different consistencies and stained glass pieces which I incorporate on top of and around the oil/acrylic design. How joyfully they integrate and play with each other!

If anything, I hope I inspire you to find the artist within you. It exists as a rebirth, a new beginning. Let your art colors jump out and shine! I feel privileged to express my inner artist; I am shaping a unique world!
